
French Open - Roland Garros

The French Open which is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks, it is held in France at the stadium called the Stade Roland Garros. The grand slam also begins in late May each year. The tournament is named after the French Pilot Roland Garros
This tournament is the only Grand slam that is held on clay. In chronological order it is the second Grand slam out of the four of the grand slams. Until the year 1975 it was the only tournament that was not held on grass courts

The characteristics of the surface because it is held on clay, is slower pace rallies and higher bounce. The Roland Garros is the most physically demanding Grand Slam because of the summer heat and the surface that means points a last longer time
The tournament used to be only open to members of French clubs. The first Women’s singles tournament was held in 1897 with only four entries. Later in the tournaments history new competitions were added such as mixed doubles in 1902 and later Women’s doubles in 1907.
During the years of 1915 to 1919 no tournament was held because of World War 1. In 1925 the tournament was then open to all amateurs across the world
