Stars of the 1970s

Many view this as the "Golden Era" of tennis and is the first full decade of the "Open Era". Many of the innovators of the "Modern" tennis game played or started their career during this decade. During most of this time the rackets used were still made of wood!

Bjorn Borg

A player from Sweden who many think set the foundation for the tennis shots of the modern game. He is widely regarded as being in the top 5 best tennis players of all time and won 11 Grand Slam tournaments.

Jimmy Connors

A very tough baseline player from America who was a strong rival to Bjorn Borg. At one point in his career, he held the record for most consecutive weeks as the worlds number one player. He won 8 Grand Slam titles.

John Mcenroe

Perhaps the most notorious tennis player of all time! A very talented serve and volley specialist, he was known for frequently arguing with umpires. Winner of 7 Grand Slam tournaments.

Arthur Ashe

Another serve and volley specialist from America. He won 3 Grand slam titles in a very difficult era, winning against some of the best players of all time during his career.

Rod Laver

An extremely technically talented all round player from Australia. The winner of the most amount of mens singles titles ever, including an impressive 11 Grand Slam wins.

Chris Evert

A strong almost exclusively baseline player from America, regarded as one of the best woman players of all time. She won an incredible 18 Grand Slam titles and was a dominant force in tennis during this decade.

Billie Jean King

An aggressive hitter from America who also had excellent volleys. She had a massive number of doubles wins also, winning 12 singles and 27 doubles Grand Slam titles!

Margaret Court

Many could argue that this Australian player with a strong attacking style was the best player of all time based on results - she won an incredible 24 Grand Slam titles! This record was not even equaled by any man or woman player until the 2020s.
